(Received March 31, 1973)

A recepie is given for the geometry of thick solenoid which produces an on-axis field of high homogeneity over a long distance. The recepie is based essentially on the least-square method for the deviation of the field intensity along the axis. It is reduced to a successive approach to the coil cross section which is unique within a given set of dimensional parameters. The method is used with a digital computer to design a superconducting solenoid.
