A phase-shift method has been applied to measure the V-V relaxation rate of CO excited up to v=9 by a collision with Hg(63P1 or 3P0), which is formed through the Hg-resonant radiation modulated at frequencies in the range of 0.12∼1.4 KHz. If it is assumed that the collisional transition is limited to v→v-1 and that a large excess of ground state CO exists in the system, the relaxation rate may be determined from the ac component of the population in each level without any knowledge of the initial vibrational distribution. The observed rates of the V-V relaxation, CO(v)+CO(0)→CO(v-1)+CO(1), are 6.2, 8.4, 10.1, 6.4, 3.2, 1.5, 0.74 and 0.53×104 Torr-1 sec-1 for excited CO in respective levels of v=2∼9.
