Deformation Vibrations of the Alkyl Chains for the Homologous Series of Terephthal-Bis-Alkylaniline (TBAA) in the Smectic B Phase

Raman spectra of the TABB(C3-C8) have been observed in the spectral range of 200–450 cm-1. Peaks disappearing during the phase transition from solid to smectic B have been found. These peaks can be assigned to the accordion vibration of the alkyl chains in TABB molecules. Their disappearance is explained by the presence of different alkyl chain conformations. In the smectic B phase, the conformation of the alkyl chains is similar to that in the isotropic liquid phase, while the aromatic frame of TBAA has a well ordered arrangement in the smectic layer similar to the crystalline solid phase.
