Particles in a mixture of Au smoke and Cu smoke, which were prepared by the gas evaporation technique, have been investigated by electron microscopy. Au–Cu alloy particles are found in the smoke mixed at a location where no metallic vapor exists. The particles collected from the place at atmospheric temperature of 450°C are disordered Au–Cu alloy with lattice parameters in a range from 0.407 to 0.361 nm. The particles collected from the place at 270°C are ordered AuCu–I and Au3Cu. The formation of these alloy particles provides a corroborative evidence for the coalescence of metallic particles.
