In this study, cubic-shaped single crystals and cap-shaped polycrystals of NaCl were grown from vapor and their growth rates were measured. The value of the condensation coefficient on the {100} faces was determined from the growth rates to be 0.25 and 0.10 at ∼600degC and at ∼750degC, respectively. The cap-shaped polycrystals grown spontaneously on a fused quartz substrate at ∼600degC showed large radial growth rates at the initial stages. These were attributable to the effect of surface diffusion of admolecules on the substrate. The mean displacements of admolecules both on the crystal and on the amorphous substrate were estimated in relation to the surface diffusion. The growth mechanism of the cap-shaped polycrystals is discussed.
