On the Superconductivity of the Bi/Tl Materials and the Implications for YBa2Cu3O7-δ near δ=0.5

Formal valence considerations strongly suggest that the high-Tc superconductivity in the newly discovered class of materials containing either Bi or Tl involves a metallic d-band based on Cu2+ ions-quite unlike the situation in YBa2Cu3O7-δ where, near δ=0, the carriers are holes in the oxygen band. It is argued that this difference is (a) the principal reason for the greatly enhanced environmental stability of the new materials, and (b) potentially relevant to an understanding of the non-zero Tc (≃45 K) now reported for YBa2Cu3O7-δ, near δ=0.5, and of the associated plateau in Tc (≃60 K) observed for 0.4<δ<0.3; various experimental checks on these ideas are suggested.
