A novel growth technique (micro-Czochralski method; µ-CZ) for single-crystal fibers is proposed. The technique is a modified Czochralski method in which a single-crystal fiber is pulled from the source melt wetting the surface of a tiny platinum resistance heater.
LiNbO3 fibers around 100 µm in diameter and 70 mm in length with either c <0001 > or X <2 11 0 > axes have routinely been pulled at a speed of 0.4–1 mm/sec. The fibers exhibit growth characteristics such as growth striations and growth ridges which are similar to those of as-grown crystal boules.
