Infrared- and Visible-Light-Sensitive Spatial Light Modulator Using Pigment-Dispersed Organic Photoconductor

A new spatial light modulator using an organic photoconductor and a polymer-dispersed liquid crystal film is developed which has sensitivity to both infrared and visible light. The photoconductor contains organic pigment of titanylphthalocyanine microcrystal particles in binder polymer and generates photocarriers under light irradiation. The device is applicable to infrared image viewers and optically addressed projection displays using various write light sources including a compact infrared laser diode. Its display application is especially significant because the liquid crystal film has the attractive feature of high transmittance for bright-image projection. The device exhibited a good contrast ratio of 40:1 and high limiting resolution of 40 lp/mm. Optical conversion from a faint near- infrared image of a candle flame to a visible image was demonstrated in real time.
