The positive ion current characteristic of a cylindrical probe in a drifting plasma is presented under the condition that the gas density is so low that the free molecular theory applies and that there is a clear boundary between the plasma and the sheath, the latter form being assumed to be a cylinder coaxial with the probe. For the estimation of the sheath thickness the equation of space-charge-limited currents is applied. The ratio between the ion currents when the axis of the probe is parallel and perpendicular to the direction of the flow is shown to provide a determination of the speed ratio.
