In order to improve auto-tracking device, a piezoelectric ceramic material and a carbon fiber-reinforced-plastic shim plate of bimorph were investigated. Introduction of Bi and Zn atoms into a ternary Pb(Ni1/3Nb2/3)O3–PbTiO3–PbZrO3 system gives rise to a pronounced increase in piezoelectric activity and densification when material is subjected to the usual sintering procedure. It was found that the deflection of the bimorph is 1.5 times as large as the deflection of conventional bimorph with isotropic metal shim plate when the direction of fiber orientation falls along the length of the bimorph element.
