A new type of high speed liquid crystal switching array is developed. The device has a simplified electrode configuration which allows a simple high speed operation and a small size cell design. Short response time of 0.5 msec and high ON/OFF light transmission ratio of 80 with 18% of total transmission are obtained for a switching array of 10 dots/mm. By applying this type of array to a character printer with loaded by amorphous silicon drum, a good hard copy is obtained at 1400 lines/min (14 pages/min for A4 size).
