We present a variational calculation of the transverse surface impedance for normal and superfluid 3He which includes, through a microscopic boundary condition, a general class of boundary scattering laws for thermal excitations. Particularly, we study the consequences of specular, backward and (for superfluid 3He–B) Andreev scattering.
